In recent years the number of men interested in Brazilian waxing has increased dramatically. What was once a considered a specialized service is now much more popular.

Yes, men get waxed there too. From athletes to gay men to straight men, there are many reasons men everywhere are getting bikini and Brazilian waxes. Many men dislike excess body hair just as many women do. Some athletes such as cyclists, swimmers, and bodybuilders need to rid their bodies of all hair to improve aerodynamics and to achieve a sleek appearance. Some men get this wax to impress or please their loved one.

The Male Bikini Versus the Male Brazilian

The male bikini wax is very similar to the female bikini wax. The main objective is clean-up, leaving a tight, trimmed area of hair.

The male Brazilian is more comprehensive. All surrounding hair is removed as well as all genital hair. Rear ends can also be waxed if needed as an add-on service.

Preparing for the First Wax

For the initial wax it is often advised to start with a bikini instead of jumping straight into a full Brazilian. Come to the appointment freshly showered and wear boxers and loose fitting pants. Loose, soft clothing will feel much better on freshly waxed skin than tight-fitting clothing.

Prepare to be involved. In all bikini and brazilian waxing, for men and women alike, the client often assists the esthetician by holding skin taut in different areas so that the service can be performed faster and more efficiently.

Hair should be approximately 1/4 inch long. Every esthetician has slightly different preferences in hair length so be sure to ask when setting the appointment. For men who shave the area, hold off on shaving for 1 to 2 weeks prior to the appointment.

When setting the appointment, ask about trimming prior to coming in. This is also something that varies between estheticians. Some prefer the trimming of long hairs be done before the appointment, others prefer to trim during the appointment to ensure hair is at a good length, and some estheticians prefer that no trimming be done at all.

Salons, Spas, and Wax Spas for Male Waxing

At one time the male Brazilian was a very specialized service with few estheticians properly trained. There were a select few who learned the process, but many hesitated due to the delicate tissue and sensitivity in the area. With the recent increase in its popularity there are now many salons and spas who offer the service.

Several options are available. Salons that staff estheticians for waxing and facial services will most likely have the male brazilian on their menu. Spas, which specialize in body and skin care services, also offer male brazilians.

Wax spas are becoming increasingly popular as well. They offer only waxing services and many wax spas specialize in male and female brazilians.

Preventing Ingrown Hairs

Exfoliation is an important part of post-wax care to help reduce and eliminate ingrown hairs. Starting a few days after the waxing appointment, exfoliate the area gently with a washcloth or exfoliating cloth in the shower 2 to 3 days per week.

Always follow any guidelines set by the esthetician regarding pre-waxing and post-waxing care.
