Dry skin is caused when skin it loses too much water or oil, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. The key to treating dry skin is preventing moisture loss.
Roberta Perry, co-creator of the Scrubz skin care line, believes that dry skin treatment can be done naturally by choosing the right skin care products. In this interview with Perry, she reveals her top tips for treating and preventing dry skin. Exfoliating Dry SkinSuite 101: What type of exfoliation process should a woman with dry skin use? Can exfoliating dry skin make it worse? Roberta Perry: Exfoliation serves to rid the skin of its dead cells, thereby increasing cellular turnover and refreshing the top most layer of the epidermis to reveal the healthier skin. There are many products on the market that scrub the skin, however the brushes, loofahs, and scrub pads, if not cleaned and dried perfectly, can harbor bacteria, and increase the chance of blemishes. Salt and sugar scrubs work similarly, by using granules that melt away, to polish the skin surface, however, sugar is better than salt for a few reasons. It will not burn, irritate, nor dry out skin the way many salt scrubs can. I believe the best exfoliation for dry or any type skin is a gentle, natural one. If done properly, it is one of the single greatest things you can do for the largest organ in your body. If over done using a harsh chemical peel, or unnatural process, it can irritate and cause extra stress on the surface layer. The Best Treatment for Dry SkinSuite 101: What is your number one secret for treating dry skin? Roberta Perry: Drinking 8-10 glasses of water a day. We moisturize from the inside out, so by drinking enough, we keep the layers hydrated. Plus, water helps release and remove the toxins from within, thereby lightening the load on your skin to push them out. Suite 101: Is there anything women should know about facial skin care products that may cause dry skin? Roberta Perry: Many of the moisturizers on the market contain alcohol in various forms. It is there as a carrier and as a drying agent for the creams. The problem is that the alcohol can dry out your skin too. When you use a drying cleanser, your body thinks it needs to overproduce its natural moisturizer (sebum oil) and it starts a cycle of dry/oily. Using an oil based cleanser helps balance your skin. Overall, according to Perry, choosing a healthy diet and natural, less abrasive skin care products can help skin become healthier and less flakey.
