Sex accessories have always been a topic left for the wee hours of the morning. Today, it's more important than ever to have the sex shop discussion, in green style.

Editor's Choice

When we think about making eco-friendly choices in our lives the things that come to mind might be changes such as recycling, taking public transportation and foregoing plastic bags for a few well made reusable organic cotton shopping totes. What we may not think of is our sex life.

Our Natural State

By now, we are all becoming familiar with the benefits of choosing products made from natural materials. Whether we are shopping for clothing or produce, the organic and natural choice is one that we are at least willing to consider and learn about.

When it comes to sex, it seems people are less willing to bring up the topic of going natural. During sex, we are probably in the most natural state a human being can be in (other than giving birth). Why not give the same consideration to what we are putting on and in our bodies when it comes to getting intimate?

What The Big Deal With Eco Sex?

When thinking about going green in the bedroom, it's not just the obvious stuff that needs attention. During the last few years, we have heard a lot of noise about the term phthalates and parabens in our personal care products. What is less considered is that these same ingredients are also found in the realm of personal sex products such as intimate toys and lubrication.

Phthalates are substances which are added to plastics to increase its flexibility, which is highly useful in terms of personal pleasure toys for men and women. Phthalates have now been found to be related to many ill health effects including hormonal changes and birth defects. In sex toys, they can also leech internally and affect women and future babies. Manufacturers of these toys have even recommended using condoms with their toys whenever they are used internally.

Parabens are preservatives which contain low level toxins. These have not been proven to be harmful in small amounts; however, people with sensitivities should stay away from these in all personal care products. The alternative to parabens is products with natural preservatives, of which there are plenty.

The Green Sex Alternative

Luckily, makers of personal products for the bedroom have heard the cries of consumers over the wave of health concerns that are linked with the materials and ingredients being used in making these products. The result of this change is a whole new range of choice when it comes to having a bit of natural fun.

Here are some companies who are creating a natural alternative to the phthalate and Paraben choices of yesterday:

 • goodcleanlove.com - Good Clean Love's motto is "making love sustainable". Company founder and owner Wendy Strgar believes that pain free intimacy and passion are an integral part of a harmonious and healthy relationship. Check out the entire line of all-natural personal products including personal lubricants, pleasure butters and love oils.
 • yesyesyes.org - Yes Pure Intimacy prides itself on providing a line of oil or water-based personal lubricants that are parabens, glycerin, hormones, silicones and petroleum free.
 • goodvibes.com – From personal lubricant to phthalate-free vibrators, Good Vibes has been a leader in the industry for over 30 years. Good Vibes features materials such as sustainable wood, glass and stainless steele as alternatives to plastic.

The Final Word

In general, talking about sex and toys can be a difficult subject to broach between the most intimate of partners. A great way to start the conversation is naturally... with a conversation piece. So check out these amazing green stores and bring home a topic starter that can have lasting effects for your health, your relationship and the environment.

I have stayed away from Jelly products for this very reason. So much has come out since Dr. Kreig's initial research and it is important that people realize what they are putting in their bodies. Green sex toys are definitely worth the few extra dollars for your piece of mind. More and more green sex toys are becoming cheaper and cheaper. This was a great, informative article, thanks so much!

I think it's incredibly important to know what we're putting in our bodies and the potential risks some of these "pleasure" enabling toys and lubricants can cause. Prior to this article I was aware of a few "green" sex products, but it's good to see more companies tackling the need to go green in the bedroom. I'm going to do some more research on this topic.
